Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is often a concern after cardiac surgery, especially because it can be triggered by any number of variables, including—it was thought—bronchodilators, which can induce tachycardia. However, researchers from Missouri Baptist Medical Center and St. Louis University, both in St. Louis, Missouri, provide evidence that postoperative bronchodilators may not trigger POAF. Moreover, levalbuterol and albuterol have roughly the same preventive effects.
