Early detection of cancer and advances in treatment have resulted in longer life for patients with cancer, making quality of life for survivors of this disease increasingly important.(1) VHA Directive 2003-034, National Cancer Strategy, points out that the nature of current treatments for cancer and their high cost as well as the often protracted nature of the disease have led to dramatic reductions in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for cancer patients.(2)
